A MARK WILKINSON KITCHEN Revisited

Kitchen Design

In 1995, I had designed a Mark Wilkinson kitchen for a couple in Bury St Edmunds and I was so busy that I forgot to photograph it.  In 2015, I happened to be in Bury St Edmunds and remembered where they lived so I thought I’d go and knock on the door to see if I would get lucky.

A gentleman opened the door and I immediately realised it was a different man from the person I was expecting. Nonetheless I explained who I was and why I was there.  He invited me in to meet his wife and to see the kitchen that I hadn’t seen for 20 years – and it had barely altered!

They told me that the kitchen was the reason they bought the house and that their family loved to visit and to be in the kitchen.  As it happened, the original client owners had moved across the road to a larger dwelling so I went across that road and got lucky a second time as I was able to say hello to them, too.

I’m so glad I knocked on the door.

From the client’s perspective:

“One of the significant reasons we bought this beautiful house was because of this wonderful kitchen.

“We understood it had been installed in 1996, and that the handmade furniture was by the renowned bespoke cabinet maker, Mark Wilkinson – with the layout designed by Sandy. It is just as solid, practical and beautiful today as when we moved in in 2000.

“We love this kitchen and our family loves this kitchen. We have a very busy home and this kitchen gets a lot of use as the central hub for everyone and everything.

“It was a pleasure to invite Sandy back into this home for her to see the legacy of her work, and for her to have our endorsement, and to prove that her lovely design has made this a very happy space for us all for decades.”
